Chapter 5 - Marching Into the Dining RoomCarrying Lily securely against her chest, Vanessa turned away from the utility kitchen. She didn't head back toward the quiet corridors of the west wing. Instead, her posture hardened into rigid, cold determination, and she marched straight toward the double doors of the grand dining room.

The soft string music and polite chatter echoed softly as she approached the threshold. She didn't knock, nor did she hesitate. With a firm, decisive push, Vanessa kicked the heavy wooden door open wider, stepping directly out of the shadows and into the brilliant glare of the crystal chandeliers.
The sudden movement caused the string quartet to falter. Conversations died out instantly. Heads turned in unison as high-society guests paused with their wine glasses halfway to their mouths, staring in absolute shock at the woman standing in the center of the room holding a child in a nightgown.
At the head of the table, Victoria paused, her wine glass freezing inches from her lips, her eyes narrowing into cold, venomous slits.
