The Shadow at the Table / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - Confronting the MatriarchVanessa walked with measured, unyielding steps straight down the center aisle of the long dining table. Every pair of eyes in the room tracked her movement. She bypassed the glittering silverware and elaborate floral centerpieces until she stood directly at the opposite end of Victoria’s seat.

Without a word, Vanessa gently set Lily down on a sturdy chair beside her, keeping her hand protectively on the little girl's shoulder. Then, with a sharp, deliberate motion, Vanessa reached into her handbag, pulled out a thick, leather-bound legal folder containing official estate documents, and slammed it down onto the polished mahogany surface right in front of Victoria.

The heavy thud echoed loudly against the fine china, startling several guests.

Victoria flushed with sudden rage, her aristocratic composure slipping for a fraction of a second. "Have you lost your absolute mind, Vanessa?" Victoria hissed, standing up partially from her chair. "How dare you burst into a formal dinner party like a common savage, disrupting our guests?"
