The Scalding Truth / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - Trial by FireThe King County Courthouse was packed to capacity for the preliminary hearing of The State of Washington v. Daniel Vance and Vanessa Miller.

I sat at the prosecution table, flanked by Miriam Cole and the state attorney. On the opposite side sat Daniel and Vanessa, both wearing cheap, court-appointed suits, their faces pale and drawn. Vanessa looked manic, her eyes darting around the room, while Daniel sat slumped, staring at the floor.

"Your Honor," the state attorney began, projecting a giant image of my blistered face onto the courtroom screens. "The evidence of domestic abuse is undeniable. The defendant, Daniel Vance, intentionally threw scalding liquid at his wife’s face to coerce her into giving up her inheritance. His sister, Vanessa, was an active accomplice, siphoning thousands of dollars from the victim’s accounts to fund her own business ventures."

Daniel’s defense attorney stood up, trying to mount a weak defense. "My client maintains that this was a tragic domestic accident. The coffee spilled during an argument, and—"

"An accident, counselor?" the judge interrupted, looking at the medical reports. "The partial-thickness burns on the victim's face and neck require months of specialized treatment. Furthermore, we have the forensic audit showing the systematic theft of eighty-five thousand dollars. This was not an accident. This was a calculated campaign of abuse and financial exploitation."

The judge looked down at Daniel and Vanessa with absolute disgust. "Based on the evidence presented, I am denying bail for both defendants. This case will proceed to trial immediately."

Vanessa let out a piercing shriek, jumping up from her chair. "She’s lying! She did this to herself! She’s a monster!"

"Order in the court!" the judge barked, slamming his gavel. "Remove the defendant!"

As the bailiffs dragged Vanessa out of the courtroom, her screams echoing off the marble walls, Daniel finally looked up at me. His eyes were filled with a desperate, silent plea for mercy.

I looked back at him, my expression serene, untouched by his desperation. The scar on my cheek was faint, but it was there—a permanent reminder of the fire I had walked through to find my strength. I gave him a single, slow nod, and watched as he was led away in chains.
