The Scalding Truth / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Boardroom TakeoverThe conference room of NexusTech was silent as the grave. The board of directors sat around the massive mahogany table, their eyes darting between me and Daniel, who sat at the far end, looking like a man awaiting his execution.

"This is absurd!" Daniel protested, trying to maintain a shred of his former authority. "Claire has no business experience! She’s a freelance graphic designer! You cannot allow her to take control of a multi-million-dollar software firm!"

"Actually, Mr. Vance," one of the board members said, his voice cold. "Claire’s father was the primary financier of this company. Under the original corporate charter, Vance & Associates holds veto power over all executive decisions in the event of a debt default. Since you failed to pay the interest, and since our forensic audit shows you siphoned company funds to pay for your sister's personal expenses, we have voted unanimously to remove you from your position as CEO."

"You can't do this to me," Daniel whispered, looking at the board members he had handpicked. "I built this company!"

"You built it on my father's money, Daniel," I said, my voice calm, clear, and perfectly modulated. "And you ran it into the ground trying to fund Vanessa’s lavish lifestyle. You stole from my personal account, you stole from this company, and you thought I would never find out because you believed I was weak."

"Claire, please," Daniel said, his tone suddenly shifting from anger to a desperate, pathetic plea. He leaned across the table, trying to make eye contact. "We’ve been married for eight years. We built a life together. Surely we can talk about this privately. I made a mistake. The coffee... it was an accident. I lost my temper."

"An accident?" I stood up, leaning forward slightly so the light caught the faint red scar along my jawline. "You threw boiling liquid at my face because I wouldn't let your sister steal my inheritance. That wasn't an accident, Daniel. That was domestic abuse. And it was the last time you will ever hurt me."

I turned to the security guards waiting by the door. "Please escort Mr. Vance from the building. He is no longer employed here, and he is barred from entering the premises."

"Claire!" Daniel screamed as the guards grabbed his arms, lifting him from his chair. "You can't do this to me! I have nothing! I have no money, no home!"

"Then I suggest you find a shelter," I said coldly, sat back down, and opened my laptop. "Now, gentlemen, let's discuss the restructuring of NexusTech."

As Daniel was dragged out of the boardroom, his screams fading down the hallway, a profound sense of peace washed over me. The battle was far from over, but for the first time in eight years, I was the one holding the cards.
