The Scalding Truth / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The House of CardsBy 3:00 PM, Daniel’s software company, NexusTech, was in a state of absolute chaos.

Daniel sat in his glass-walled office, staring at a stack of urgent emails from his board of directors. The news of the called-in loan had spread like wildfire. His investors were panicked, demanding meetings, threatening to pull their support if he couldn't secure the three million dollars within forty-eight hours.

"Daniel, you need to fix this!" Vanessa screamed, bursting into his office without knocking. She threw her designer handbag onto his desk. "The landlord of the commercial space just called me. They canceled my lease because the deposit check bounced! My studio is gone! My reputation is ruined!"

"Do you think I care about your studio right now?!" Daniel shouted back, slamming his fists on his desk. "My entire company is going under, Vanessa! Claire’s lawyers called in the Vance & Associates loan. They are going to seize my software patents! If they do that, I am bankrupt!"

"Well, do something!" Vanessa hissed, her eyes wild with greed and fear. "Go to her. Beg her. Use your charm! You’ve spent eight years manipulating her, surely you can do it one more time!"

"I can't," Daniel muttered, his voice cracking. "The police served me with a temporary restraining order this morning. If I go near her, I go to jail."

"Then send me," a cold, smooth voice spoke from the doorway.

Daniel and Vanessa spun around. Standing in the entrance of the office was Chloe, Vanessa’s younger sister, who had been working as a receptionist at NexusTech. But she wasn't alone. Behind her stood two men in dark suits carrying legal briefcases.

"What is the meaning of this?" Daniel demanded, standing up.

"Mr. Vance," one of the men said, stepping forward. "We represent Vance & Associates. We are here to serve you with a formal petition for involuntary bankruptcy. Furthermore, we have a warrant to seize all company servers and financial records, effective immediately."

"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed, lunging at the lawyer. "This is our company!"

"Actually, it isn't," the lawyer replied calmly, gesturing to the security guards waiting in the hallway. "As of ten minutes ago, Claire Vance has assumed the role of majority shareholder and interim CEO of NexusTech, by virtue of the debt-to-equity conversion clause in your loan agreement. You are both trespassers on this property."

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. He looked out the glass walls of his office and saw the employees he had managed for years staring at him with pity and curiosity.

And then, the elevator doors at the end of the hall slid open.

I stepped out, wearing a sharp cream power suit that perfectly complemented my new, elegant style. The medical bandage on my cheek was gone, replaced by a neat, subtle silicone patch. I walked down the corridor with absolute grace, my heels clicking rhythmically against the polished concrete floor.

Daniel stared at me, his mouth open, as if he were seeing a ghost. I was no longer the quiet woman who made his breakfast. I was the master of his destiny.
