Chapter 2 - The Ring and the ReckoningDaniel returned to the estate at six in the evening, his chest puffed out with the arrogance of a man who believed he had successfully broken his wife's spirit. Vanessa followed close behind him, carrying several shopping bags from high-end boutiques on Fifth Avenue, bought with the last of the cash she had managed to squeeze from their joint credit card.

"I hope Claire cleaned up the kitchen before she crawled back," Vanessa said, kicking off her designer heels in the foyer. "The smell of burnt espresso was clinging to the curtains."
"She’ll be waiting in the bedroom, crying and ready to hand over the bank card," Daniel chuckled, loosening his tie as he walked into the kitchen. "She knows she has nowhere else to go. Her father is dead, and she has no friends left in this city."
But as Daniel stepped into the kitchen, the silence of the house hit him. The lights were off. The air was cold.
He flipped the light switch. The kitchen was immaculate, except for two items resting in the middle of the large marble island.
The stained ceramic coffee mug. And sitting directly beside it, glittering coldly under the halogen lights, was Claire's platinum wedding ring.
Daniel frowned, a sudden prickle of irritation washing over him. He walked over to the island and picked up the ring. Beneath it was a single, neatly folded sheet of legal paper. He unfolded it, expecting a tear-stained apology letter.
Instead, the letterhead at the top of the page read: Cole & Associates: Family Law and Corporate Litigation.
Daniel,
By the time you read this, a temporary restraining order has been filed against you with the King County Superior Court, citing the physical assault that took place at 8:15 AM this morning. You are legally barred from contacting me, approaching my place of work, or remaining within 500 feet of my person.
Furthermore, this letter serves as formal notice of the immediate termination of your occupancy of the property located at 1402 Whispering Pines Drive. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises. Failure to do so will result in immediate legal eviction.
Do not attempt to call. Speak only to my attorney.
— Claire
Daniel stared at the paper, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson. "What is this trash?" he muttered, his voice shaking with disbelief.
Vanessa walked into the kitchen, holding a glass of wine. "What's wrong, Dan? Is she throwing a tantrum?"
Daniel slammed the paper onto the marble counter. "She left. She got a lawyer. And she’s trying to evict me from my own damn house!"
Vanessa gasped, snatching the paper. As her eyes scanned the legal jargon, her smug expression finally faltered. "Evict you? How can she evict you? You bought this house!"
"No," Daniel whispered, a sudden, sickening realization dawning on him. "My startup was short on capital when we bought it. Her father's trust put up the down payment. I thought my name was on the deed..."
"You thought?" Vanessa raised her voice, her panic rising. "Daniel, if we don't have this house, and we don't have her bank card, how am I supposed to pay the deposit for my beauty studio? The lease is due tomorrow!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel roared, pulling out his phone. He dialed Claire's number, but the line didn't even ring. It went straight to a pre-recorded automated message: The number you are trying to reach has restricted incoming calls.
He dialled his bank app next, intending to withdraw funds from their shared savings account to show her he didn't need her money. But when he entered his credentials, a red warning box popped up across the screen:

Daniel dropped his phone onto the counter. The silence of the empty kitchen suddenly felt like a trap closing in around him.
