Chapter 9 - The Courtroom ReckoningThe federal trial of The United States v. The Mercer Family was the most talked-about event of the season.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, my hand holding my father’s, my posture perfect, my face calm. Beside us sat the state prosecutor, who presented the mountain of digital forensic evidence we had compiled over the months.

Vanessa, Evelyn, and Brooke sat at the defense table, wearing plain, dark jail jumpsuits, their hair unkempt, their eyes completely hollowed out by months of pre-trial confinement. They looked like a hollow shell of the arrogant people who had stood under the crystal chandeliers of the hotel ballroom.

"These defendants did not just commit financial fraud, ladies and gentlemen of the jury," the prosecutor said, pointing a finger directly at Evelyn. "They operated a systematic criminal enterprise that used physical violence, public humiliation, and financial coercion to silence their victims. When their own family member tried to protect her dignity, they tore her dress and called her a parasite."

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

"We, the jury, find the defendants guilty on all counts," the foreperson announced.

The judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp, resounding crack. "Evelyn Mercer, Vanessa Mercer, and Brooke Cole, your actions represent a level of calculation and cruelty that this court rarely witnesses. I sentence you to a combined term of forty-five years in a federal penitentiary with no possibility of parole."

As the bailiffs led them away in chains, Daniel turned to look at me, a low, pathetic sob escaping his lips. But I didn't look at him; my eyes were focused entirely on the bright, clear sky visible through the high courtroom windows.
