The Ruined Gown / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Vale CapitalWithin three minutes of my phone call, the grand double doors of the ballroom burst open.

A team of eight elite, dark-suited security officers marched down the center aisle, led by Marcus, my father’s chief of security. The guests parted in a wave of panicked whispers as the officers surrounded Vanessa, Evelyn, and Daniel, cutting them off from the exit.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Evelyn shrieked, her high-society mask cracking. "This is my daughter's wedding! You cannot bring armed guards in here!"

"Actually, Mrs. Mercer, we can," Marcus said, his voice smooth and completely professional. He held up a digital tablet, displaying a live feed of the ballroom's security cameras. "And we are currently executing a lock-down of this facility on behalf of the property’s owner, Mr. Arthur Vale."

Vanessa’s face turned an ugly, pale shade of grey. "Arthur Vale? The billionaire? What does he have to do with this?"

"He’s my father, Vanessa," I said, stepping forward, my voice holding a cold, absolute authority that made Daniel’s head snap up in shock.

"Your... your father?" Daniel stammered, his eyes wide with a sudden, desperate terror. "Claire, you told me your family ran a small logistics business."

"Vale Capital is a logistics and investment conglomerate, Daniel," I said, looking down at his weak, pale face. "I simply didn't see the need to brag about my family's wealth to people who valued nothing else. But tonight, your family has officially defaulted on their respect."

Marcus adjusted his tablet, zooming in on a specific section of the security camera feed from ten minutes earlier. "Your Honor, guests, if you look at the screen, you’ll see exactly where the million-dollar ring went."

The screen displayed a clear, high-definition video of Vanessa's cousin, Brooke, quietly sliding the diamond ring from Vanessa’s dressing table into her silver evening bag while the bridesmaids were busy adjusting the veil.

The ballroom erupted into absolute, deafening chaos. Vanessa turned to look at Brooke, who was currently trying to slip out of the exit, only to be blocked by two of my father’s security officers.

"Brooke!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate rage. "You stole my ring?!"

"She didn't just steal the ring, Vanessa," Marcus said, his eyes sharp. "According to our financial databases, Brooke’s family has been using your family's boutique business to launder money to pay off her father's massive gambling debts. And it looks like your mother, Evelyn, was the one who approved the transactions."
