The Ruined Gown / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Eviction from the KingdomBy Thursday morning, the grand, historic Mercer farmhouse was completely silent.

The expensive furniture, bought with siphoned charity funds, was being packed into large cardboard boxes by a team of professional movers. Evelyn stood on the wet gravel driveway, clutching her designer coat to her chest, her face a pale, weeping mask of absolute humiliation as the sheriff supervised her departure.

"Claire!" Evelyn shrieked as my car pulled up to the gate. She rushed toward the fence, her hands clawing at the metal bars. "You have to stop this! I have nowhere to go! This is my family's ancestral home!"

"This home was rented from a management firm owned by Vale Capital, Evelyn," I said, stepping out of the car, my posture perfect and proud. "And your lease is officially terminated for non-payment."

"You... you monster!" she sobbed. "You planned this! You wanted to destroy us!"

"No, Evelyn," I said, looking down at her. "You planned your own destruction the moment you decided that my silence was weakness. You stood in that ballroom and tore my dress, calling me 'poor trash'. Now, you’re the one standing in the mud with nothing but a garbage bag of clothes."

The sheriff stepped forward, placing a hand on Evelyn's shoulder. "Move along, ma'am. The property is officially under the control of Blackridge Holdings."

Evelyn fell to her knees in the wet gravel, weeping hysterically, as the movers carried the final boxes out of the house. I turned my back on her, got back into my car, and drove away without looking back.
