Chapter 5 - The Secret in the Silver BagWhile the corporate collapse of Mercer Enterprises was finalized, the criminal case against Brooke and Evelyn was growing more severe.

Detective Ramirez, the lead investigator on the grand larceny and fraud case, sat in my office with a serious expression. He opened a plastic evidence bag, revealing Vanessa’s silver evening bag, which had been recovered during the wedding lockdown.
"It’s not just a diamond ring, Claire," Ramirez said, pointing to a small, encrypted USB drive found hidden inside the lining of the bag. "We had our cyber unit run a diagnostic on this drive. It contains the complete financial blueprint of Evelyn’s offshore money-laundering schemes."
"She was siphoning funds from Vanessa's charity?" I asked.
"Yes," Ramirez nodded. "Over four million dollars. She was using Brooke's beauty channel and boutique business to make the deposits look like legitimate marketing contracts. It's a massive, multi-million-dollar federal tax evasion case."
"They thought they were so clever," I whispered, shaking my head. "They spent years calling me a parasite while they were siphoning the blood of their own family's foundation."

"The District Attorney has just authorized a formal arrest warrant for Evelyn and Brooke," Ramirez said, standing up. "They’re being taken into custody as we speak. And because of the federal nature of the charges, their family cannot post bail."
I looked out the window, a deep, beautiful sense of peace washing over me. The monsters had finally been caged by their own greed.
