Chapter 8 - Eviction and Arraignment

Diane stood alone in the center of the grand dining room, surrounded by half-eaten plates and empty chairs. Her arrogance had evaporated, leaving behind the hollow, desperate shell of a cornered criminal.
"Brian... you can't do this to your own mother," Diane pleaded, her voice trembling as she reached toward me with manicured hands. "I did what was best for the family! I was protecting our status!"
"You protected your greed," I said coldly, stepping back from her touch. "The power of attorney has been legally revoked. The master deed you signed yesterday transferred full and exclusive title of this estate back to me. You and Ashley have exactly thirty minutes to take your personal clothing and vacate my property."
"And the two-million-dollar severance buyout?" Ashley screamed, tears of fury ruining her heavy makeup. "Where is the money you promised us?!"
"There was no buyout, Ashley," Marcus stated calmly. "Brian's engineering firm was never sold. The documents you signed were standard voluntary asset return agreements and full confessions of civil financial liability."
Two sheriff deputies stepped forward, pulling sets of steel handcuffs from their utility belts.
"Diane Hayes and Ashley Hayes," Deputy Ramos declared. "You are under arrest pursuant to a grand jury indictment for felony grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and aggravated vulnerable adult abuse."

Ashley shrieked as the cold metal snapped around her wrists. Diane collapsed back into her chair, weeping in utter disgrace as the deputies escorted them out the front entrance, past the neighbors who had gathered on the sidewalk to witness their public downfall.
The luxury SUV was impounded by federal marshals, the locks on the estate doors were replaced within the hour, and the dark chapter of their deceit was permanently closed.
