Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

A stunned murmur rippled through the dinner guests. Diane’s face flushed a deep, mottled red.

"How dare you create a scene in front of our guests!" Diane snapped, standing up from her chair with rehearsed indignation. "Have you lost your mind?"

Marcus stepped forward, opened his briefcase on the side sideboard, and connected a high-powered projector to the room’s smart display wall.

With a single tap on his tablet, the dining room wall lit up with high-resolution bank statements, forged signatures, medical denial letters, and security camera footage recovered from the basement utility hallway.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus announced with crystal clarity. "Over the past three years, Mrs. Diane Hayes and Miss Ashley Hayes engaged in systematic elder abuse, financial embezzlement, and reckless endangerment against Mr. Brian Hayes and his lawful wife, Claire Hayes."

Gasps erupted around the table. Several prominent guests pushed back their chairs, staring at the screen in absolute horror.

The screen displayed clear transaction logs showing $420,000 transferred to high-stakes casino accounts, alongside copies of the medical insurance cancellation notice showing Claire’s life-saving cancer treatment denied due to intentional non-payment.

"You forged my signature to steal this house," I said, walking down the length of the table toward my mother. "You locked my sick wife in an uninsulated storage room. You forced a dying woman to scrub floors and sell her own natural hair to buy a cancer biopsy while you bought velvet dresses and champagne."

Ashley jumped to her feet, knocking her crystal glass over. "That's a lie! She's crazy! She wanted to live back there!"

"The receipts for the hair sale at the Scottsdale salon were found in your personal vanity drawer, Ashley," Investigator Miller of the AG's office stated, stepping forward with an evidence bag. "Along with the pawn tickets for Mrs. Claire Hayes's family heirloom jewelry."

Diane’s guests looked at her with unvarnished disgust. Within two minutes, every single guest stood up, grabbed their coats, and walked out the front doors in total silence, refusing to even look at Diane as they left.
