Chapter 5 - The Clinic in Secret

Thirty minutes after the documents were signed, I pulled my truck up to the rear service gate of the estate. I helped Claire into the front passenger seat, wrapping her in a warm cashmere sweater and fastening her seatbelt with gentle care.
We drove straight to the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center in north Phoenix.
I had spent the early morning hours on the phone with the chief of oncology, securing immediate admission, private suite accommodation, and top-tier oncological specialists using my restored executive health plan and liquid reserves.
Dr. Sarah Vance, a renowned breast surgical oncologist, conducted a comprehensive PET scan and reviewed Claire's biopsy slides.
"Mr. and Mrs. Hayes," Dr. Vance said, sitting down with us in the consultation room. "The good news is that the clinic surgeon performed an adequate preliminary resection. The cancer has not metastasized to her bones or distant organs. However, because treatment was delayed by nearly four months, there is micrometastasis in two sentinel lymph nodes."
Claire gripped my hand, her knuckles turning white.
"What is the prognosis, Doctor?" I asked steadily.
"With immediate, aggressive dose-dense chemotherapy followed by targeted radiation therapy and immunotherapy, her five-year survival and complete cure rate is over eighty-five percent," Dr. Vance stated confidently. "We are admitting her to the specialty oncology wing today to begin nutritional stabilization, port placement, and round-one treatment tomorrow morning."

Claire burst into tears—not tears of fear, but of overwhelming relief. For months, she had been trapped in a dark cellar, convinced she was going to die alone while my family laughed upstairs.
I held her close, kissing her forehead. "You're safe now, Claire. You are never going back to that house."
