Chapter 12 - The Reckoning of GertrudeWith Gertrude and Prudence permanently out of our lives, the Bayside Heights estate underwent a complete psychological cleansing. I hired contractors to tear down the old service kitchen wall entirely, merging the dark, moldering back rooms into a bright, modern family kitchen filled with sunlight and open space.
We threw out the chipped plastic buckets, the thin pillows, and every reminder of the shadows they had been forced to inhabit. In their place, we filled the house with laughter, the smell of baking bread, and the sound of Jamie running down the polished marble hallways he had once been forbidden to touch.
Sarah gradually regained her strength, enrolling in university classes to finish her degree—something Gertrude had always discouraged, claiming a wife’s only job was to stay hidden and compliant. I turned down several lucrative overseas contracts, choosing instead to establish a local engineering consultancy in Bayside Heights so I would never miss another bedtime, another milestone, or another quiet morning with my family.
