Chapter 1 - The Weight of Five

Chapter 1 - The Weight of Five YearsThe heat in Saudi Arabia did not merely warm the skin; it hollowed a man out from the inside, baking away patience, softness, and illusion until only raw endurance remained. For sixty months, I existed in a perpetual haze of blinding sun, gritty wind, and the relentless metallic clamor of heavy machinery. Every drop of sweat that fell into the red dust represented hours traded away from my wife, Sarah, and my son, Jamie, who was barely a toddler when I left and a school-aged boy by the time my contract finally concluded ahead of schedule.
Every single month, I wired nearly every dollar of my grueling earnings back home. Because Sarah lacked her own established financial independence at the outset, I made the fatal mistake of routing the funds through my mother, Gertrude. “Make sure Sarah has everything she needs,” I would repeat into my phone across international lines. “Make sure my son never lacks anything.” Gertrude’s voice always carried a smooth, reassuring cadence. “Your wife is out shopping,” she’d say, or, “She’s at the salon.”
I believed her because the alternative—that the woman who gave me life would weaponize my absence against my own flesh and blood—was unthinkable. I had built the Bayside Heights mansion brick by brick with the profits of my physical torment, envisioning a sanctuary of marble floors and golden light where my family would thrive. Instead, as my flight touched down and I drove toward the wrought-iron gates carrying a box of expensive chocolates and gold jewelry, I was flying blind toward a trap of my mother's design.
