THE MONUMENT OF ASHES / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Legal ChokeholdOver the next two weeks, the legal noose tightened around Gertrude and Prudence with relentless precision. Marcus ensured that every financial avenue they attempted to exploit was slammed shut. Their credit cards were declined at gas stations; their luxury European sports cars were repossessed from the curb outside the cheap motel where they were forced to stay; and Prudence’s boutique was padlocked by federal marshals pending liquidation.

Stripped of their artificial wealth, their high-society friends vanished like smoke. The same people who had sipped expensive wine in our dining room while Sarah ate spoiled rice behind the wall now crossed the street to avoid making eye contact with Gertrude.

Sarah, meanwhile, was slowly healing under medical care and the overwhelming warmth of my constant presence. Every day brought a little more color back to her cheeks, and every night, Jamie slept soundly in a real bed without fear, his little hand locked tightly around my thumb.

We spent hours walking through the sprawling gardens of the estate, reclaiming the spaces that had once been forbidden to them. The mansion was no longer a monument to my absence; it was becoming a true home.

Chapter 15 - Under a New SunOne year to the day after my return from Saudi Arabia, we hosted a gathering in the backyard of the Bayside Heights mansion. There were no high-society snobs, no fake socialites, and no parasitic relatives. Just loyal friends, neighbors who had quietly suspected the truth and offered kindness when they could, and my wife and son, radiant and whole.
