Chapter 4 - The Breaking Point

The buzzing of the clippers had drowned out the ambient jazz music for anyone paying attention, but the VIP section was too drunk and self-absorbed to care. Elena had fought back initially, her instincts screaming for her to strike out, but she knew that a physical altercation would only feed their narrative. Instead, she had endured the humiliation with a chilling, silent grace that unnerved even her tormentors. As patches of her dark hair fell onto the white marble floor, Preston laughed maniacally, leaning over her shoulder to ensure his friends captured every angle on video. "Smile for the camera, sweetheart," Preston jeered. "This is going viral by midnight." When the blade finally lifted, leaving her scalp exposed and raw, Elena did not cry out. She simply checked the bar clock, registering that her shift was expiring in precisely sixty seconds. Dennis Crowe, watching from behind the service bar, wrung his hands together, his conscience briefly pricking him before greed and cowardice took over. He reached for a bottle of champagne, intending to bring it over as a peace offering to distract them, hoping they would release Elena without further incident. But Elena rose under her own power, her dark eyes completely devoid of fear. She untied her stained black apron, placed it neatly on the counter, and wiped away the single tear that had escaped her control. The air in the immediate vicinity of Table Twelve suddenly felt heavy, as if the oxygen was being sucked out of the room. The laughter died down, replaced by an eerie, unnatural stillness that swept outward from the service station toward the main dining hall. The heavy glass front doors of the Monarch Room unlocked with a sharp, echoing click, and the heavy oak panels pushed inward.
