Chapter 3 - The House of Privilege

The Monarch Room occupied the penthouse level of a restored architectural landmark overlooking the river, selling not just gourmet food, but the intoxicating illusion that everyone inside mattered infinitely more than everyone outside. Senators, movie stars, real estate tycoons, and corporate heirs ate beneath European chandeliers while jazz played softly against a backdrop of rare vintage wines. Preston Hale, the twenty-seven-year-old son of Hale Urban Development founder Richard Hale, believed he owned the room simply because his father’s public contracts funded half the city's infrastructure. Having never held a real job in his life, Preston spent his trust fund on expensive bottles and casual tyranny. Earlier in the evening, his table had grown aggressively loud, harassing nineteen-year-old Mia, a timid busser who struggled to clear glasses while Preston’s friends deliberately blocked her path. When Elena had stepped in to defend Mia, Dennis Crowe had cowardly ordered her to appease the high-paying table, prioritizing corporate revenue over basic human decency. Elena had returned to Table Twelve with a complimentary birthday dessert, maintaining her composure even as Preston criticized her lack of enthusiasm. But privilege breeds casual sadism. When Preston’s friend Nolan Pierce flicked the blue ribbon holding Elena’s long dark ponytail and Grant Whitaker mocked her serious demeanor, a line was crossed. When Preston demanded she submit to their amusement, things escalated past the point of no return. Believing they were untouchable under the blanket of generational wealth, Preston signaled a female companion from an adjacent VIP booth—a bored socialite named Veronica who dabbled in amateur cosmetology—and forced Elena to the floor, holding her down while the electric clippers buzzed to life.
