Chapter 2 - The Silence Before the Storm

Dominic Vale hated the Monarch Room. He had hated it from the moment Elena insisted on taking a job as an ordinary waitress under her maiden name, Hayes. To the public, Dominic was a quiet, shadowy figure whose name carried weight in union halls, construction boardrooms, and back-room negotiations across the city. To the underworld and the police, he was a man who commanded absolute obedience without ever raising his voice. But at home, he was simply Dom, a husband who wanted nothing more than to protect his wife from the casual cruelty of the wealthy elite. They had agreed to three conditions: a driver waiting two blocks away, a text message sent the moment her shift ended, and absolute anonymity regarding her true identity. For eleven months, the arrangement had held. Yet tonight, a strange, persistent unease had gnawed at Dominic’s chest ever since Elena left their Lake Forest estate. Sitting in the back of his armored sedan parked in a shadowy alley near the Chicago River, he checked his watch for the third time in ten minutes. It was 9:58 PM. Two minutes until her shift ended. Reaching for his secure phone, he hovered his thumb over her contact name, debating whether to break their rule and check in early. Before he could press call, his driver, a hulking ex-marine named Marcus, stiffened in the front seat. "Boss, look at the service entrance," Marcus murmured, pointing toward the side valet doors. Dominic’s gaze shifted, his cold gray eyes narrowing as he saw restaurant security guards whispering frantically near the pavement. Something was wrong. Without another word, Dominic opened the car door and stepped out into the freezing Chicago wind, his long black wool coat billowing around him like the wings of a predator.
