Chapter 1 - The Final Three Minutes

The glittering chandeliers of the Monarch Room mirrored the cold, unfeeling atmosphere of Chicago’s elite. At precisely 9:57 on a freezing Friday night, twenty-nine-year-old Elena Vale—known to the restaurant staff as Elena Hayes—knelt on the pristine marble floor, gathering fistfuls of her own shorn hair while six wealthy men laughed above her. Preston Hale, holding the electric clippers that had just violated her dignity, grinned widely as his companions recorded the spectacle on their smartphones. Dennis Crowe, the floor manager, stood paralyzed near the service station, too terrified of losing high-spending patrons to intervene. Elena looked up at the antique wall clock, noting that only three minutes remained in her shift. Rising slowly, her freshly shaved scalp burning from where the blades had scraped too close, she folded her apron with steady, trembling hands. "Are you finished?" one of the men mocked. Elena placed the apron on the counter and wiped a tear from her cheek. "My shift ends at ten," she said quietly. "After that, I'm no longer your waitress." None of the laughing men understood why Dennis suddenly turned a ghostly shade of pale. They would understand in exactly three minutes, when the heavy glass front doors swung open and the most feared man in Chicago stepped inside to find his wife’s hair scattered across the floor.
