Chapter 12 - Reclaiming the Night

Back at the Lake Forest estate, the roaring stone fireplace in the master study cast a warm, flickering amber glow across the room. Elena sat wrapped in Dominic’s heavy cashmere coat on the plush velvet sofa, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea laced with honey. The jagged, uneven patches of her shorn hair were stark reminders of the humiliation she had endured earlier that evening, but as she looked around the quiet, secure sanctuary of her home, the sting of the insult had completely faded, replaced by an overwhelming sense of profound peace. Dominic walked into the study carrying a small porcelain dish containing a warm, soothing lavender compress. Kneeling softly on the Persian rug in front of the sofa, he gently took her hand, his expression softening into one of deep, abiding tenderness. "How is your scalp?" Dominic asked quietly, carefully applying the cool compress to the raw skin near her temple. "It burns a little," Elena admitted with a soft sigh, leaning her head back against the cushions. "But I'll live." Dominic’s jaw tightened slightly, a lingering trace of his suppressed fury flashing in his gray eyes. "I should have broken his hands, El. I should have let Marcus handle them out in the alley." Elena reached down, placing her palm against his cheek, forcing him to look directly into her eyes. "No, Dom. If you had done that, it would have been about your power, your anger, and your turf. What happened tonight was ugly, but it taught me something vital." Dominic raised an eyebrow, covering her hand with his own. "What's that?" "For eleven months, I tried to pretend I was just an ordinary waitress, living an ordinary life," Elena said softly. "I wanted to escape your shadow and prove I could stand on my own two feet. But the truth is, the world outside our gates is full of monsters who prey on people they think have no protection. Taking off my name badge didn't change who I am, and it didn't change who you are to me." Dominic smiled faintly, leaning his forehead gently against her knee. "You'll always be my whole world, El. With or without the hair."
