Chapter 8 - Hunted in the EvergladesThe storm raged across the Atlantic, turning the ocean into a churning nightmare of twenty-foot swells. I couldn't risk heading toward public marina facilities in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, where Aegis Biotechâs police contacts would be waiting to arrest us on fabricated charges.

Instead, I navigated the vessel inland, navigating through the dark, murky channels of the Florida Everglades.
By 4:00 a.m., we docked the boat deep in a secluded mangrove swamp near an abandoned poaching cabin Marcus had previously marked on our GPS.
Claire was shivering uncontrollably, her face pale from exhaustion and stress. I wrapped her in a thermal emergency blanket, sat her down on a wooden bench inside the cabin, and lit a small kerosene heater.
âHow are you holding up?â I asked softly, rubbing her cold hands.
âIâm scared, Daniel,â she whispered, resting her head against my chest. âNot for me... but for our baby. If Richard catches us, he won't stop until every trace of this trial is destroyed.â
âHe won't catch us,â I promised, kissing her hair. âI lost you once, Claire. I let distance and stupid pride tear us apart two years ago. I am not losing you again. Not ever.â
For the first time in years, Claire smiled through her tears. She reached out and pulled the platinum wedding ring from my pocket, slipping it back onto her finger where it belonged.
âIt fits,â she whispered softly.
âIt never stopped belonging to you,â I replied.
At daybreak, the sound of a distant helicopter engine thundered over the marshlands.
I peeked through the wooden shutters. A black Eurocopter bearing the Aegis Biotech corporate logo was hovering low over the tree line, scanning the waterways with thermal imaging equipment.
They were sweeping the swamp section by section.
âWe can't outrun a helicopter on foot,â Claire said, her voice tight.
âWe don't need to outrun them,â I said, looking at the encrypted laptop in my bag. âWe need to broadcast the truth to the entire world before they pull the trigger.â
I opened the laptop and connected it to a satellite uplink unit Marcus had stashed on the boat. Using the microchip from Claireâs ring, I prepared a digital broadcast payload containing the complete Project Libra files: video footage of secret lab experiments, audio recordings of Richard Vance ordering toxic injections, and financial ledgers linking top state politicians to Aegis Biotech bribes.
âIâm sending this directly to the FBIâs Internal Corruption Division, the Department of Justice, and every major news network in North America,â I declared.
âWait,â Claire said, pointing to the screen. âThereâs a live broadcast stream uploading to the Miami Herald server right now. We can leak it live!â
I hit the upload button. The progress bar began to tick upward: 10%... 30%... 50%...
Suddenly, the front door of the cabin was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash!

Wood splinters flew across the room as two tactical operatives smashed through the doorway, weapons raised. Behind them stepped Arthur Vance himselfâthe seventy-year-old billionaire chairman of Aegis Biotech, flanked by Richard.
âShut down that laptop!â Arthur bellowed, his voice filled with tyrannical rage.
