Chapter 4 - Code Blue at Mercy BayI pushed my twin-turbo sedan to its absolute limit, devouring the miles between North Carolina and South Florida in a blur of rain, asphalt, and burning adrenaline. By 6:00 a.m., the pale pink sun was rising over the skyline of Miami, reflecting off the ocean and the glass towers.

Mercy Bay Medical Center was a massive, modern complex overlooking Biscayne Bay. As I pulled up into the emergency bay, I saw two dark blue SUVs with tinted windows idling near the ambulance entrance. Four broad-shouldered men in tailored black suits stood near the sliding doors, earpieces tucked into their collars, scanning the perimeter with hawk-like vigilance.

My friend Marcus met me near the parking structure. Standing six-foot-three with a military crop and a grim expression, Marcus handed me a visitor badge and a small encrypted earpiece.

“The hospital is under soft lockdown,” Marcus warned, walking alongside me toward a side entrance. “Those guys outside belong to Titan Security—a high-end mercenary outfit hired by Aegis Biotech. Aegis is a multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical giant owned by the Vance family.”

“Vance?” I froze. “Claire’s boss at Apex Horizon was named Richard Vance.”

“It’s the same family dynasty,” Marcus said, his voice grim. “Old money, massive political influence, and deep ties to genetic research. Whatever Claire uncovered during her work at Apex connected back to Aegis Biotech’s classified labs.”

We snuck past the main floor using a staff keycard Marcus had secured from a contact. We took the service elevator to the fourth-floor Intensive Care Unit.

The hall was unnaturally quiet. Outside Room 412, two hospital security guards stood awkwardly while a tall, sharp-featured lawyer in a gray suit argued with a female physician.

“This court order gives Aegis Biotech full medical power of attorney over patient Claire Carter,” the lawyer demanded, brandishing a leather folder. “She signed away her legal rights when she signed the clinical protocol agreement.”

“I don't care what papers you have!” the doctor snapped back. “The patient is unstable! She was poisoned with an experimental hormone suppressant!”

I stepped into the hallway, my heart pounding like a war drum. “Get away from her door.”

The lawyer turned, glaring at me with icy condescension. “Who are you?”

“I’m her husband,” I said, stepping forward until I was inches from his face.

“Ex-husband,” the lawyer corrected smoothly. “You have no legal standing here, Mr. Carter.”

Before he could finish his sentence, a loud alarm blared overhead. A red light above Room 412 began flashing rhythmically, sending a piercing tone echoing down the corridor.

“Code Blue, ICU Room 412! Code Blue!”

The doctor lunged for the door, and I pushed past the lawyer, shoving him hard into the wall.

Inside the room, the scene was horrific. Claire was convulsing on the bed, her body arching violently as heart monitors shrieked in continuous flatlines. Standing beside her bed was a man in a white lab coat—holding a syringe that had just been emptied into her IV line.

“Hey!” Marcus shouted, drawing his concealed sidearm. “Don't move!”

The fake doctor dropped the syringe, grabbed a heavy metal oxygen tank, and smashed it into the glass panel of the observation window, sending shards shattering across the floor. He leaped through the broken frame into the outer corridor, sprinting toward the fire exit.

Marcus gave chase, his boots crunching on the broken glass.

I ignored the runner and rushed to Claire’s side. Her face was blue, her lips chattering violently as nurses rushed in with a crash cart.

“Claire! Claire, look at me!” I screamed, grabbing her icy hand. “I’m here! Daniel is here!”

Her eyes fluttered open for a split second. Through the haze of toxin and terror, her fingers squeezed mine with incredible, desperate strength.

“The ring...” she gasped, blood spilling over her lip. “Look... inside... the ring...”

Then her eyelids fluttered shut, and her heart monitor flatlined into a solid, terrifying tone.
