Chapter 6 - The Bloodline ConspiracyThe storm over Biscayne Bay broke late that evening. Heavy rain lashed against the reinforced glass doors of the Key Biscayne safe house, matching the dark tempest raging inside my mind.

Around 10:00 p.m., Claire finally stirred.

I rushed to her bedside, sitting on the edge of the mattress and taking her small, warm hand in mine. Her eyes opened slowly, cloudy with sedation, until they focused on my face.

“Daniel...” she whispered, her voice raspier than before.

“I’m here, Claire. You’re safe. You’re in Key Biscayne with Marcus and me.”

Tears welled in her eyes, trickling down her cheeks onto the white pillowcase. “The baby... Daniel, is our baby...”

“The baby is alive,” Dr. Flores stepped forward, smiling gently. “The toxin they gave you was neutralized in time. Your baby has a strong heartbeat, Claire.”

Claire let out a ragged sob, pulling my hand to her cheek. “I’m so sorry, Daniel. I’m so sorry I ran away in Atlanta.”

“Tell me everything,” I murmured, kissing her forehead. “No more secrets. No more running.”

Claire took a deep, trembling breath and looked up at the ceiling.

“Two years ago, when we got divorced, I thought I was just leaving a marriage that had drifted apart,” she began. “I took the job at Apex Horizon Realty to start fresh. But six months ago, I was assigned to review land deeds for a new Aegis Biotech research facility in West Palm Beach. I found double ledgers—millions of dollars flowing into offshore shell companies owned by Richard Vance.”

“Your boss,” I said.

“Richard isn't just a corporate VP,” Claire said, her voice shaking with anger. “He is the son of Arthur Vance, the founder of Aegis Biotech. I found out they were using fertility clinics in Atlanta, Miami, and Charlotte to administer experimental gene-modification drugs to unsuspecting patients. They called it Project Libra.”

“And you confronted him?”

“No,” Claire shook her head. “I tried to gather evidence first. But three months ago, I felt sick after an office cocktail party. I went to a clinic for blood tests... and realized Richard’s team had spiked my drink with the prototype drug. They discovered I was digging into their files, so they turned me into a human test subject.”

My blood boiled. My hands clenched into white-knuckled fists.

“When I bumped into you in Atlanta,” Claire continued, tears streaming down her face, “I didn't plan on sleeping with you, Daniel. I missed you so much. But when I woke up at 5:00 a.m. bleeding, I realized the drug was causing my body to reject the pregnancy. I knew if Richard found out I was with you, he would kill you too. I had to run. I spent the last month going underground, trying to find an antidote and secure the evidence in the ring you gave me.”

“Why didn't you ask me for help?” I demanded gently, my voice breaking.

“Because I loved you too much to make you a target!” she cried. “Arthur Vance controls judges, police chiefs, and federal agents. He erases people who cross him!”

Suddenly, the lights inside the safe house flickered and died, plunging the bedroom into pitch blackness.

Outside, the gentle hum of the backup generator failed to start.

Marcus’s voice crackled through my earpiece, sharp and alarmed: “Daniel! They cut the power lines and jammed our cell signals! Perimeter motion sensors are tripping on the north lawn! We’ve been burnt!”
