Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Sunshine StateâClear!â

The defibrillator paddles struck Claireâs chest with a muffled thud. Her body jolted against the white sheets.
âNo rhythm! Charge to two hundred! Clear!â
The monitor shrieked its agonizing, unbroken monotone. I was shoved back by two trauma nurses, but I refused to leave the room. I stood pressed against the wall, tears stinging my eyes, my hand clutching the platinum ring in my pocket.
Inside the ring. Her last words echoed in my head over the mechanical chaos.
âClear!â
Thump.
A faint, trembling pulse flickered across the screen. Beep... beep... beep.
âWe have sinus rhythm!â the doctor yelled, wiping sweat from her forehead. âGet her on hyper-oxygenated protocol! Administer three milligrams of atropine immediately!â
As the medical team stabilized her, Marcus re-entered the room, bleeding from a cut over his eyebrow.
âThe assassin got away through the parking garage,â Marcus grunted, pressing a napkin to his head. âHe had a getaway vehicle waiting. But I managed to grab his bag. Daniel, we need to move. Titan Security is bringing police officers with fake warrants right now to seize her.â
With the help of Dr. Rebecca Floresâthe nurse who had called meâwe hastily transferred Claire into an unmarked medical transport vehicle owned by Marcusâs private firm. We drove out of the hospital facility just as three Miami-Dade police cruisers with flashing lights pulled up to the main entrance.
We moved Claire to a safe houseâa secluded waterfront estate in Key Biscayne owned by Marcusâs family. The house was equipped with private medical equipment, fortified security cameras, and armed guards.
While Dr. Flores tended to Claireâs IV fluids in the master bedroom, I sat down at the dining table under the bright overhead lights. I pulled Claireâs platinum wedding ring out of my pocket.
I brought it under a magnifying desk lamp. To the naked eye, it looked like a normal band. But as I inspected the smooth inner curve, I noticed a tiny, hair-thin seam near the emerald setting.
Using a fine needle from the medical kit, I pressed firmly against the microscopic pinhole beside the stone.
With a tiny click, the top section of the ring unlatched, revealing a micro-engraved microchipâsmaller than a grain of riceâembedded inside the hollow interior of the platinum metal.
âWhat is that?â Marcus asked, leaning over my shoulder.
âItâs a military-grade micro-SD drive,â I whispered. âClaire didn't keep her wedding ring out of sentimental love. She used it as a vault.â
Marcus hooked the chip to a high-security, air-gapped laptop. A secure password prompt flashed on the screen.
I looked toward the bedroom where Claire lay unconscious, her pale chest rising and falling rhythmically under the oxygen mask.
I typed in the date of our wedding: 1014.
Access Granted.
A flood of encrypted files, patient records, and recorded audio logs spilled across the monitor.
The title of the primary file sent a chill straight to my bones:
PROJECT LIBRA: FETAL GENOME RESTRUCTURE AND SYNTHETIC LIPID DISRUPTION.
Marcus scanned the executive summary, his jaw tightening with every line. âMy God, Daniel... Claire wasn't just working in commercial real estate. She was auditing Aegis Biotechâs acquisitions. She uncovered that Aegis was secretly testing experimental gene-editing drugs on pregnant women without their consentâusing fertility clinics across the Southeast as cover.â
âWhy?â
âBecause the drug creates custom genetic immunity to rare neurodegenerative diseasesâworth billions to military buyers,â Marcus said, pointing to a document. âBut thereâs a ninety-percent fetal mortality rate. The women who were injected experienced sudden, severe hemorrhaging within twelve weeks.â
The blood on the hotel bed in Atlanta. The dark red stain.

It wasn't just a sudden injury or a standard medical emergency. Claire had realized she was pregnant with my child, and she knew that Aegis had secretly targeted her with the drug to eliminate both her and her evidence.
She had fled my room in Atlanta not to protect herself from meâbut to protect me from the monsters hunting her.
