Chapter 3 - The Call from Miami“Mr. Daniel Carter?” a woman’s voice asked. She sounded breathless, speaking in a hurried, low whisper that immediately set my alarm bells ringing.

“Yes, this is Daniel. Who is this?”

“My name is Rebecca Flores. I am a charge nurse in the intensive care unit at Mercy Bay Medical Center in Miami.”

I stood up so fast my desk chair crashed into the bookshelf behind me. “Claire? Is she there? Is she alright?”

There was a tense, agonizing pause on the other end. I could hear the rapid beep of medical monitors and the distant chime of an overhead hospital page.

“Mr. Carter... Claire was admitted to our facility late last night under an alias, but during her intake, she wrote your name and phone number on a piece of paper and hid it inside her shoe,” Nurse Flores explained, her tone urgent. “She listed you as her sole emergency contact.”

“What happened to her? What’s her condition?”

“She was found collapsed near the Port of Miami with signs of severe physical trauma and dehydration. But Mr. Carter, you need to listen to me very carefully.” Rebecca lowered her voice even further, until it was barely a murmur above the static. “Your ex-wife is approximately twelve weeks pregnant.”

The world seemed to stop spinning. The room tilted around me.

Twelve weeks. Three months.

That meant the baby had been conceived around the time of our encounter in Atlanta.

“She's... pregnant?” I stammered, my head spinning. “My God...”

“Yes,” Rebecca said quickly. “And there’s something else. Twenty minutes ago, two men claiming to be private security from a corporation called Aegis Biotech arrived at the floor. They presented signed legal guardianship documents and demanded immediate custody of the patient. They tried to physically disconnect her IVs and remove her from the ICU before our chief physician intervened.”

“What? That’s abduction!”

“The police are in the lobby right now, but these men have powerful attorneys with injunctions,” Rebecca continued, her voice trembling with genuine fear. “They claim her pregnancy is subject to a non-disclosure agreement and a clinical trial contract. Mr. Carter, Claire woke up for thirty seconds earlier. She gripped my arm and whispered, 'Tell Daniel they're going to take the baby.' You need to get here now!”

Before I could ask another question, a loud crash echoed through the receiver, followed by heavy footsteps and harsh shouting.

A male voice with a cold, metallic authority boomed in the background: “Who are you talking to? Drop that phone right now! Disconnect that line!”

“Get out of this nurses' station!” Rebecca screamed.

Then came the sound of a scuffle, a sharp clatter, and the line went completely dead.

“Rebecca? Rebecca!” I yelled into the speaker, but there was only white noise.

I dropped the phone, grabbed my leather jacket and car keys, and sprinted out of my apartment. I didn't care about my job, my scheduled meetings, or the five-hundred-mile distance between Charlotte and Miami.

My ex-wife was pregnant with my child, trapped in a Miami hospital, and dangerous men were trying to steal her away.

As I sped down Interstate 95 into the dark, rainy night, my knuckles white on the steering wheel, I pulled out my phone and dialed my oldest friend, Marcus Vance, a former federal prosecutor now running a private security firm in South Florida.

“Marcus,” I said as soon as he answered. “I need weapons, legal muscle, and a fast route into Mercy Bay Medical Center. Someone is trying to erase my family.”
