Live feeds were broadcasting directly to financial networks worldwide. The company’s stock had tumbled eight percent throughout the morning, hovering dangerously close to the threshold that would allow Apex Global to execute its hostile takeover.
Clare Bennett walked onto the stage alone. She wore a striking black suit, standing at the podium beneath the bright studio lights with absolute composure.
The room erupted in a flurry of shouted questions.
“Ms. Bennett! Is it true you had an affair with a subordinate?”
“Are you resigning as CEO?”
“Will the board remove you today?”
Clare raised her hands calmly, waiting for the noise to subside. When the auditorium fell silent, she spoke into the microphone, her voice echoing clearly through the speakers.
“Good afternoon,” Clare began. “Over the past six hours, rumors regarding my personal life and my leadership of Bennett Corporation have been circulated to the press. A private video was selectively edited and leaked to destroy confidence in this company.”
She gestured toward the massive screen behind her.
“Today, I am not here to hide behind corporate public relations. I am here to show you the unedited truth.”
The screen flickered to life. Instead of the sensationalized clip, the video showed the full perspective of Delgado’s camera. It displayed Harrison Ford’s representative meeting Ryan Bennett in the shadowed parking structure, exchanging an envelope of cash and a flash drive containing stolen proprietary trade secrets.
A collective gasp swept through the press corps. Cameras flashed rapidly as reporters scrambled to record the footage.
“What you are witnessing,” Clare announced powerfully, “is a coordinated attempt at corporate espionage, insider trading, and market manipulation orchestrated by former board member Harrison Ford in collusion with Apex Global.”
She paused, letting the magnitude of the revelation sink in.
“As for the video of myself and Ethan Miller,” Clare continued, her expression softening into genuine sincerity. “Mr. Miller is a dedicated operations manager, a widowed father, and a man of rare integrity. What began as a professional professional relationship developed into a deep personal connection during a period of immense corporate pressure. I offer no apologies for caring about a good man.”
She looked directly into the center news camera.
“Effective immediately, Harrison Ford and Ryan Bennett have been removed from their positions and arrested by federal authorities for corporate espionage and fraud. Bennett Corporation has filed an injunction against Apex Global, and our third-quarter earnings report—released five minutes ago—shows a fifteen percent increase in net operational efficiency.”
On the side of the stage, Ethan stood watching her. Beside him, Lily was holding his hand, wearing her best Sunday dress and watching the screen with wide, curious eyes.
“Is that the lady from your car, Daddy?” Lily whispered softly.
Ethan looked down at his daughter and smiled, kneeling beside her. “Yes, sweetheart. That’s her.”
