Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the BoardroomThe trap was sprung on Tuesday morning.

When Ethan arrived at his desk, he immediately felt the shift in the air. The usual morning chatter in the operations department had vanished. Coworkers were gathered around computer monitors, whispering in muted, hurried tones. As Ethan walked past, several people turned to look at him, their expressions a mix of shock, judgment, and pity.

Before he could reach his desk, Patricia Vance appeared from the corner office, accompanied by two armed corporate security guards.

“Ethan Miller,” Patricia said, her voice loud enough to carry across the open floor. “You are required in the main boardroom immediately.”

“What is this about, Patricia?” Ethan asked calmly, setting his briefcase down.

“You are being placed on emergency administrative leave pending a formal investigation into executive misconduct and breach of corporate ethics,” she announced formally. “Surrender your access badge and company-issued laptop.”

A quiet gasp echoed through the cubicles. Ethan looked around, seeing the judgment on his colleagues' faces. He slowly unclipped his badge and laid it on the desk alongside his laptop. He reached into his bag, pulled out a small framed photograph of Lily wearing her dinosaur pajamas, and held it tightly in his hand.

“Lead the way,” Ethan said evenly.

When they reached the executive suite, the double doors of the main boardroom were standing open. Inside, the long mahogany table was surrounded by the members of the Board of Directors. At the head of the table stood Ryan Bennett, looking triumphantly composed.

Seated near the center was Clare. She looked pale, her hands tightly clasped on the table in front of her. On the large digital presentation display mounted on the wall, a frozen frame of a video was playing—the unmistakable image of Clare and Ethan kissing inside his car.

As Ethan stepped into the room, Ryan turned to face the board.

“Members of the board,” Ryan announced, his voice ringing with rehearsed authority. “As you can see from the evidence gathered by our security team, Chief Executive Officer Clare Bennett has engaged in an inappropriate, unethical relationship with a subordinate employee.”

Clare stood up, her eyes blazing with fury. “This is a violation of my privacy, Ryan! You had me followed!”

“I conducted an internal security audit to protect this firm from liability!” Ryan countered smoothly, raising his voice. “You are compromising your judgment, Clare. First, you refuse to approve necessary operational restructuring. Then, we find you engaged in intimate encounters with an operations manager whose department was slated for evaluation!”

An elder board member, Arthur Vance, cleared his throat heavily. “Clare... this is a severe breach of corporate governance. If this video leaks to the press, our stock value will plummet. It suggests favoritism, conflict of interest, and lack of executive restraint.”

“Ethan Miller has received no special treatment, no promotions, and no financial benefits!” Clare argued, her voice trembling with righteous anger. “His work record is flawless!”

“It doesn't matter!” Ryan interjected sharply. “The appearance of impropriety is enough to destroy investor confidence. As Vice Chairman, I am formally moving for a vote of no confidence against Clare Bennett, and the immediate termination of Ethan Miller for gross misconduct.”

Ethan stood near the entrance, surrounded by security, watching the board members nod in quiet agreement. Ryan’s trap was masterfully executed. By framing their genuine human connection as a corrupt corporate scandal, he had manipulated the board’s paranoia to snatch control of Bennett Corporation.

Clare looked across the long table at Ethan, her eyes filled with an agonizing mixture of apology and helplessness.

Ryan smiled, preparing to call for the formal vote. “If there are no objections—”

“I have an objection,” Ethan’s calm voice cut through the tense room.

Every head turned toward the operations manager. Ryan sneered. “You don't have a voice here, Miller. You’re an employee facing termination.”

Ethan adjusted his coat, holding Lily’s photograph in one hand, and looked directly at Ryan Bennett. “I may be an employee, Mr. Bennett. But before you cast that vote, perhaps you should ask yourself who was recording the video... and what else that camera caught.”
