The Mechanic of the Heart / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Counter-SurveillanceThe boardroom descended into chaos as corporate security moved to detain Harrison Ford and Ryan Bennett. Outside the glass walls, news alerts were already popping up on employee phones as tabloid headlines broke the story: Billionaire CEO Scandal: Love Affair in the Executive Suite.

In the immediate aftermath, Clare called an emergency executive session in her private office. Joined by Ethan, Arthur Vance, and the head of cybersecurity, Marcus Vance (no relation to Patricia), they gathered around her desk.

“The stock opened down four percent,” Arthur reported grimly, monitoring his tablet. “If it drops past ten percent, Apex Global’s automatic buy-out clause triggers with our institutional investors.”

“We need to issue a statement,” Patricia Vance urged, standing near the door. “We need to deny the relationship and suspend Mr. Miller officially to calm the markets.”

“No,” Clare said firmly.

Patricia blinked in surprise. “Ms. Bennett, standard crisis PR dictates—”

“Standard crisis PR got us into this mess,” Clare interrupted, her voice resolute. She looked across the desk at Ethan. “We aren't going to lie, and we aren't going to scapegoat Ethan.”

Ethan stepped forward. “Clare is right. Denying the relationship plays right into Harrison’s narrative. It makes us look defensive and guilty. We need to shift the narrative from a personal scandal to an unmasked corporate sabotage.”

“How?” Arthur asked. “The public sees a video of a CEO kissing her employee. That’s all they care about.”

“They care about the video because they think it represents corruption,” Ethan said, pulling out his personal phone and laying it on the desk. “What if we show them the entire video? Not the thirty-second clip Harrison leaked, but the full four-hour recording captured by Delgado’s camera?”

Marcus, the cybersecurity chief, looked intrigued. “What’s on the rest of the file?”

“On the rest of the file,” Ethan explained, “is Ryan Bennett meeting with Harrison Ford’s intermediary in the parking lot twenty minutes before the kiss occurred, receiving a flash drive containing the leaked operational data. The camera was running continuously. Harrison’s operative is clearly visible handing over the bribe.”

Clare looked at Ethan in astonishment. “How do you have the full file?”

Ethan offered a small, modest smile. “When I tracked the IP addresses three days ago, I didn't just look at Bennett Corporation’s servers. I hacked into Delgado’s cloud backup. He keeps unedited duplicates of all his client files on a remote server as blackmail insurance. I downloaded the raw footage last night.”

Arthur gasped, a sudden grin spreading across his aged face. “You have Harrison’s operative on tape handing over the stolen trade secrets?”

“With time stamps, audio, and facial recognition metadata,” Ethan confirmed.

Clare stood up, a surge of energy revitalizing her posture. “Patricia, cancel the standard PR statement. Schedule an international press conference in the main auditorium for 2:00 p.m. We are going to broadcast the truth live to the markets.”

She walked around her desk and stood before Ethan. In front of Arthur and Patricia, she reached out and took his hand, holding it firmly.

“Thank you, Ethan,” she whispered, her eyes shining with warmth.

“I told you,” Ethan replied softly. “You’re not in this burning room alone.”
