The Mechanic of the Heart / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Brother's GambitThe air in the boardroom was suffocating. Ryan stood isolated at the head of the table, his bespoke suit no longer giving him an air of authority, but making him look like a trapped actor on an empty stage.

“You think this changes anything?” Ryan sneered, his eyes darting frantically across the faces of the board members. “Look at the documents on that screen! Look at the date stamps!”

Arthur Vance zoomed in on the digital ledger logs. “What are you referring to, Ryan?”

“The surveillance didn't start two weeks ago when I hired Delgado!” Ryan declared, his voice rising in desperate triumph. “Look at the secondary server logs from six months ago! Someone else was accessing Clare’s private logistics files long before I ever put a camera on her car!”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the screen. Amidst the financial transfers to Delgado Surveillance, a series of hidden data packets were highlighted in red—encrypted files being routed out of Bennett Corporation to an offshore server in the Cayman Islands.

Clare walked over to the digital display, her eyes scanning the complex server routes. “These are the confidential route designs for our new automated distribution hubs... Who authorized these transfers?”

Ryan gestured wildly toward the board. “Not me! I discovered those leaks while looking into Miller! Someone on this board has been selling our proprietary logistics architecture to Apex Global—our primary competitor!”

A murmur of shock rippled through the room. Apex Global was Bennett Corporation’s fiercest rival, a conglomerate that had been systematically underbidding them on international shipping contracts for the past year.

“That’s absurd,” declared Harrison Ford, a senior board member sitting near Ryan. “We are all major shareholders. Why would anyone destroy their own equity?”

“Because Apex Global isn't just buying data,” Ethan interrupted, his analytical mind assembling the pieces at blinding speed. He stepped up to the console and touched the screen, bringing up the offshore account routing numbers. “They’re offering a buy-out premium. If Bennett Corporation’s stock value drops significantly due to a leadership scandal, Apex can execute a hostile takeover at fifty cents on the dollar.”

Clare looked at Ethan, the horrifying truth dawning on her. “The scandal... the leaked video... it wasn't just Ryan trying to replace me as CEO.”

“It was designed to trigger a shareholder panic,” Ethan confirmed quietly. “Ryan was the weapon, but he wasn't the mastermind. Someone fed Ryan the information about us to push him into a corner and force a public explosion.”

Ryan went pale. He looked at the offshore routing numbers, then slowly turned his head to stare at Harrison Ford. “Harrison... you told me Delgado was discreet. You gave me his contact information.”

Harrison’s polite, dignified expression vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened stare. “Shut your mouth, Ryan.”

“It was you!” Ryan gasped, realization hitting him like a physical blow. “You used me to set up Clare so Apex could buy the company!”

“Security,” Arthur Vance called out, his voice shaking with authority. “Lock down this room. Nobody leaves.”

Harrison slowly pushed his chair back and stood up. He adjusted his silk tie with chilling composure. “Save your drama, Arthur. The board vote is irrelevant now. The story of the CEO’s affair is already hitting the press feeds. By noon, the market will react, and Apex will launch its tender offer.”

He looked at Clare with a cold, condescending smile. “You were a good CEO, Clare. But you were always too sentimental. You sacrificed profit for loyalty, and in this world, loyalty doesn't yield a return on investment.”

Clare stood tall, her hands resting flat on the mahogany table. “You under-estimate this company, Harrison. And you severely under-estimate me.”
