Chapter 6 - Shadows of the SyndicateThe boardroom fell into a brief, heavy silence. Ryan’s confident posture stiffened slightly, his eyes narrowing as he glared at Ethan.

“What ridiculous game are you playing, Miller?” Ryan scoffed, attempting to maintain his dominant posture before the board. “The video speaks for itself. You were caught taking advantage of your CEO.”

“I’m not playing a game, Mr. Bennett,” Ethan replied, taking a step forward despite the security guards beside him. “You claimed this video was obtained through an ‘internal security audit.’ But Bennett Corporation doesn't employ private investigator Delgado, does it?”

At the mention of the name Delgado, Ryan’s expression flickered—a subtle tightening around his eyes that didn't escape Clare’s notice.

“Who is Delgado?” Clare asked, looking sharply between Ethan and her brother.

Ethan turned to face the board members. “Two weeks ago, Mr. Bennett hired a private investigation firm—Delgado Surveillance—using funds routed through an off-book subsidiary registered in Delaware. He didn't just record my car. He tapped Ms. Bennett’s personal phone and installed tracking software on her private vehicle.”

“That’s libel!” Ryan snapped, his voice losing its refined polish. “Security, remove this man from the premises immediately!”

“Hold on,” Arthur Vance commanded, raising a hand to stop the guards. The senior board member leaned forward, his bushy eyebrows drawn together. “Mr. Miller, those are serious allegations. Do you have proof of illegal corporate espionage?”

Ethan reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive. He walked over and placed it on the mahogany table in front of Arthur.

“On that drive are the banking records linking Ryan Bennett’s personal account to Delgado Surveillance,” Ethan explained calmly. “As an operations manager, my job is analyzing supply chain logistics and data flows. When I noticed anomalous data requests passing through our internal servers three days ago, I tracked the IP addresses. Someone was pulling operational files and executive schedules out of this building.”

Clare stared at the silver drive, then slowly turned her gaze toward her brother. The color had returned to her face, replaced by a cold, dangerous clarity. “Ryan... did you spy on me?”

“I was protecting the family legacy!” Ryan shouted, abandoning his calm facade. “You were ruining us, Clare! You were letting your soft heart destroy everything Dad built! I did what was necessary to save this company!”

“By manufacturing a scandal?” Clare said, standing up to her full height. “By invading my life and dragging an innocent employee and his family into your ambition?”

“Innocent?” Ryan laughed bitterly, pointing at Ethan. “He’s a nobody! A sixty-thousand-dollar-a-year logistics clerk who wormed his way into your life because he knew you were lonely!”

Ethan looked at Ryan with calm dignity. “I never asked Clare for a single dime, Mr. Bennett. I never asked for a promotion, a raise, or a title. I offered her something you never could: honesty.”

Arthur Vance picked up the silver flash drive and plugged it into the boardroom console. A series of financial transactions, emails, and surveillance logs appeared on the large digital display, replacing the frozen image of the kiss.

The board members began whispering frantically among themselves as they read the documents. The narrative had shifted dramatically in a matter of minutes.

Arthur looked up, his expression grim. “Ryan Bennett... it appears you have used corporate funds to conduct unauthorized, illegal surveillance on the Chief Executive Officer.”

Ryan looked around the room, realizing the ground was dissolving beneath his feet. “This is a setup! He tampered with those files!”

“The digital signatures are verified by our primary server, Ryan,” Clare said, her voice cutting through his panic like a blade. “You didn't just spy on me. You committed corporate treason.”
