THE MEASURE OF MERCY / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Shadows in the ShowroomWhile Marigold and Rowan labored in the basement, dark forces moved above. Arthur Vance, the lead investor, had no intention of allowing a simple saleswoman to save the company. Vance had secretly struck a deal with a rival luxury conglomerate to buy out Blake’s Footwear at a bargain price if the gala presentation failed.

At 3:00 AM on the night before the gala, Vance used his master keycard to enter the darkened boutique. He slipped quietly down the stairs toward the private vault where Marigold’s newly finished collection was stored.

Carrying a bottle of industrial solvent, Vance intended to ruin the leather finishes on the main centerpiece boots, making them appear stained and ruined before the morning press arrived.

He pushed open the vault door—only to freeze in his tracks.

Sitting on a leather bench inside the dimly lit vault was Rowan Blake, holding a thermos of coffee, his arms crossed over his chest. Beside him stood two head security officers.

“Working late, Arthur?” Rowan asked softly, his voice echoing in the concrete room.

Vance stammered, trying to hide the bottle behind his coat. “I... I was just checking on the progress of the display pieces!”

Rowan stood up, taking the bottle of solvent directly from Vance’s hand. “You sold out your shares to the Valenti Group yesterday afternoon, Arthur. We tracked your financial transfers two hours ago.”

Security officers stepped forward, escorting the pale, trembling investor off the premises. Rowan locked the vault door, turning back toward the workshop where Marigold was putting the final hand-stitched touches on a brilliant gold-leafed evening sandal. He smiled softly, realizing he was no longer just protecting his company—he was protecting the woman who had captured his heart.
