THE MEASURE OF MERCY / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - An Unplanned ReprieveThe morning rush brought a wave of high-profile clientele into Blake’s Artisanal Footwear. Golden chandeliers cast warm reflections across display shelves featuring hand-stitched leather heels priced at thousands of dollars a pair. Marigold moved between shoppers with effortless charm, retrieving inventory, answering inquiries, and carefully hiding the agonizing pain radiating down her spine.

From his elevated glass office overlooking the showroom floor, Rowan observed her every move. He opened Marigold’s human resources file on his desk and uncapped his red fountain pen. Protocol was simple: employees who brought personal distractions to the workplace or showed physical impairment were given formal warnings or terminated. His luxury brand was built on an image of flawless perfection.

Below, Marigold reached high toward a top shelf to retrieve an exotic leather shoe box for a prominent socialite. As her arms extended, her spine locked in a sudden spasm. She gasped silently, her balance wavering for a fraction of a second, and a dark spot of blood bloomed through the fresh tape on her fingers. Yet, within a heartbeat, she recovered her posture and handed the box to the customer with a brilliant, practiced smile.

Rowan paused, the nib of his pen hovering above the termination form. He saw no carelessness in her actions; he saw a terrifying, unbreakable level of endurance.

He pressed the intercom button. “Marigold, step into my office.”

Minutes later, Marigold stood before his mahogany desk, her hands clasped tightly behind her back to hide their trembling. “Mr. Blake... please,” she pleaded softly, her eyes wide with desperation. “I can take extra night shifts. I can clean the stockrooms. Just please don't take my job.”

Rowan closed the folder with a quiet thump. “Take tomorrow off, Marigold.”

She gasped, her face turning pale. “You’re firing me?”

“It is a paid day off,” Rowan said, his voice dropping into an uncharacteristically gentle tone. “Go home. Take your daughter to the park. Rest.” Marigold stood frozen in shock, tears spilling over her lashes as she realized kindness, not cruelty, was being extended to her.
