Chapter 3 - The Hidden JournalDr. Ruiz immediately ordered a hospital transport van, contacting Detective Sarah Vance from the State Police Major Crimes Division—an investigator independent of the corrupt local department.

While Emma and I received medical treatment for our fractured ribs and contusions, Detective Vance sat beside our hospital beds, taking down our detailed testimonies.

“Who was Daniel?” Detective Vance asked softly, her pen poised over a official notepad.

“Our dad disappeared eight years ago,” I explained, my voice trembling with years of suppressed terror. “Wade told everyone Dad abandoned us in Nevada. But two years ago, Mom hid a leather-bound journal behind the drywall in the laundry room.”

Emma sat up, clutching her hospital blanket. “Mom wrote down everything. Wade threatened to kill us if she ever went to the sheriff. He told her he buried Dad beneath the floorboards of the old detached workshop.”

Detective Vance’s eyes went dark as flint. She picked up her radio. “All units, execute a priority search warrant on the Miller residence at 404 Maple Drive immediately.”
