Chapter 2 - The Corrupt BadgeThe silent alarm brought two officers down the ER corridor within ninety seconds.

Through the frosted glass window, I saw Officer Millerâa veteran cop with a thick mustache who frequently attended Wadeâs Sunday backyard barbecues.
âOpen up, Elena,â Officer Miller called out, tapping his heavy ring against the glass. âWade is a respected county corrections officer. This is a domestic misunderstanding.â
Dr. Ruiz didn't move toward the door lock. Instead, she stepped between the gurney and the glass, shielding Emma and me with her body.
âOfficer Miller, these fifteen-year-old girls have identical, systematically inflicted defensive trauma,â Dr. Ruiz stated through the intercom. âI am invoking mandatory medical hold protocols. State Child Protective Services and the State Police Special Victims Unit have been notified.â
Millerâs face hardened. He turned to Wade, nodding toward the rear ambulance bay exit.
