Chapter 7 - The Dynamic Duo's DesperationThe private terminal of JFK Airport was quiet, the rain beating heavily against the glass windows of the VIP lounge.

Evan stood near the bar, wearing a dark trench coat, his face pale and sweating as he checked his watch every ten seconds. Beside him, Mara was pacing back and forth, clutching her leather designer bag tightly against her chest.

"The pilot says the clearance is delayed because of the storm, Evan," Mara hissed, her voice trembling with a raw, desperate panic. "We need to leave now! The police are probably already looking for us!"

"Quiet, Mara!" Evan snapped, his voice losing all its polished control. "The bail was processed. We are legally allowed to travel. Once we reach the Caymans, they can't touch us. The accounts are registered under the shell trust. We can start over."

"You won't be starting anything, Evan," a calm, clear voice spoke from the entrance of the lounge.

Evan spun around, his heart hammering against his chest, to find me standing in the doorway. I was wearing a sharp, dark double-breasted coat, my arms crossed, flanked by Daniel, Leah, and Detective Ruiz.

"Claire..." Evan stammered, taking a step back. "How did you find us?"

"You used the corporate credit card to book the private flight, Evan," I smiled, a slow, pitying shake of my head. "You always were incredibly sloppy with your bookkeeping."

"This is harassment!" Mara shrieked, pointing an accusing finger at me. "We are legally free on bail! You have no right to block our departure!"

"We aren't blocking you, Mara," Detective Ruiz said, stepping forward and pulling a fresh, official warrant from his jacket. "The federal court just revoked your bail after receiving the toxicity reports from Claire’s medical files. You are being charged with first-degree domestic poisoning, federal conspiracy, and corporate espionage. Hands where we can see them."

Suddenly, the glass doors of the terminal burst open, and a crowd of twenty local reporters with cameras and bright spotlight lamps rushed in, their lenses instantly focusing on the panicked couple.

"Evan! Is it true you tried to poison your wife to steal her company?!"

"Mara! How does it feel to be caught fleeing the country in a stolen penthouse?!"

The flashing lights were blinding, capturing every line of terror and humiliation on their faces as the police officers pulled their arms behind their backs and clicked the handcuffs shut. The corporate titans of New York were being led away in chains, in front of the entire country.
