Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Shell Corporate EmpireFor three days, Leah, Daniel, and I lived in the executive conference room, the lights burning late into the night as we connected the hard drive files to the state’s financial registry.
The external hard drive we found in Evan’s locker was the missing piece of the puzzle. It contained the complete, unredacted communication records between Evan and Mara, along with the digital setup of the dummy corporations they had used to launder the siphoned capital.
"It's a massive network, Claire," Leah said, pointing to a graphic on the projector screen. "They weren't just siphoning money from our reserves. They were using our company's proprietary software code to build a rival platform in secret. They were planning to launch their own company the moment they had you declared incompetent."
"They were going to leave Vance Tech a hollow shell," Daniel said, his jaw clenching with disgust. "And use my name as the fall guy for the regulatory violations. They had documents with my forged signature ready to be filed with the SEC."
"We have everything we need," I said, leaning back in my chair. "The wire fraud, the corporate espionage, the identity theft, and the physical poisoning. This isn't just a divorce trial anymore, Daniel. This is a federal conspiracy case."
My phone buzzed on the table. It was a message from Marcus, our head of security.
Claire. Evan’s father has just authorized a five-million-dollar bail payment. He’s being released from custody in an hour. They are planning to leave the state tonight.
I stood up, my chair scraping violently against the floor. "They think they can run. Leah, freeze his passport. Daniel, call Detective Ruiz. We need to intercept them before they reach the private airfield."

"We can't get a warrant to block his departure in under an hour, Claire," Leah panicked. "The legal system moves too slowly."
"Then we don't use the legal system," I said, a cold, dangerous glint in my eyes. "We use the media. Call the reporters. Tell them the corrupt CEO’s son is currently trying to flee the country to escape federal indictment."
