Chapter 3 - The Media MasterstrokeBy midnight, my driveway was a chaotic scene of flashing blue lights, whirring television cameras, and frantic murmurs from local reporters. Leah had used her old contacts to tip off the city's top financial blogs, pitching a story they couldn't resist: A multi-million-dollar tech empire's CEO catches her husband and best friend in a web of corporate theft and betrayal.

When the police finally arrived, I unlocked the bathroom door.
The heavy oak door swung open, and the bright light of the hallway flooded the room. Evan stepped out first, wrapped in a white bath towel, his face a mixture of humiliation and desperate rage. Mara followed closely behind, clutching her damp dress against her chest, her eyes widening in horror as she saw the crowd of police officers, reporters, and flashing cameras waiting in the foyer below.
"Claire, what is the meaning of this?!" Evan hissed, trying to shield his face from the camera lenses pointing through the front windows. "This is a private marital dispute! Have these people removed!"
"This isn't a marital dispute, Evan," I said, my voice projecting clearly over the whispers of the crowd. "It's a crime scene. You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and identity theft."
"This is a setup!" Mara shrieked, her voice cracking as the local news reporter stepped forward with a microphone. "Claire is mentally unstable! She’s been taking heavy medication! She’s fabricating these charges because she’s jealous!"
"The medication you've been forcing her to take, Mara?" Daniel stepped forward from the shadow of the staircase, holding a sealed plastic bag containing the high-dose sleeping pills we had found in Mara’s purse. "The ones you insisted she take for her 'anxiety'? We’ve already sent the toxicology report to the police. You’ve been poisoning her to make her look irrational."
The lead detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "Evan Vance, Mara Cole, you are under arrest. Hands behind your backs."

As the cuffs clicked shut around Evan's wrists, he turned to look at me, his eyes filled with a sudden, desperate panic. "Claire, please... think about the company. The stock price will plummet if this gets out! We can settle this privately!"
"The company is my father’s legacy, Evan," I said, looking down at him with an expression of pure, unyielding ice. "And it’s finally clean. Take him away."
