The Last Dinner Party / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Hostile TakeoverThe aftermath of Chapter 6 was swift. Richard, a practical, ruthless businessman, immediately understood that Claire held all the power. The financial fraud (Chapter 3) and the specific clause in the prenup (Chapter 4) meant that Claire wasn't just a scorned wife; she was the majority stakeholder in Daniel's assets, including the stolen foundation funds and the properties they financed.

She had leveraged her forensic skills to execute a hostile takeover, not just of Daniel’s equity, but of Vanessa’s leveraged positions.

Claire met with Richard and his lawyers—no longer Daniel's lawyers—the next morning. Richard was still wearing yesterday's suit, looking like a ghost of the patriarch from Chapter 1. Claire wore a tailored gray suit, matching her meticulous energy. She was accompanied by Sarah, her legal counsel.

Claire laid out the dynamic proposal. "You want discretion, Richard. You want to save the Sterling brand. Fine. But I will not be silenced with a payout and a confidentiality clause. Your son and wife used your foundation as a personal ATM while carrying on an incestuous affair. They intended for me to take the fall if the charity was audited."

Her conditions were non-negotiable:

Immediate, expedited divorce. Daniel’s defense must be "irreconcilable differences" with no contest.

Total liquidation and transfer to Claire of all marital assets dissipated through the affair and embezzlement, including the Miami condo and the high-value gifts (watches, jewelry).

Daniel must sign over his controlling shares of "Sterling Solutions" (now renamed and reorganized) and be legally banned from ever using the "Sterling" name for business ventures. He would retain a tiny, locked equity fund, but no cash and no power.

Vanessa would not be fired. She would be publicly reassigned to a remote, non-influential post within the company—a humiliating exile—while dynamic claw-backs began on all properties financed with the embezzled funds.

A public statement by the Sterling Foundation acknowledging the "discovery and internal rectification of a dynamic financial irregularity" without naming names, but validating Claire’s audit.

Richard resisted. "This strips them of everything, Claire. They are my family."

"Family is what I saw in that portrait, Richard," Claire said, referencing image_92fc8d.jpg. "This isn't revenge. This is a dynamic restructuring of equity. I am claiming what was stolen, including my five years."

The "family dynamic" of Chapter 1 was officially dissolved. The hostile takeover was complete.
