The Last Dinner Party / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Prenup PlayThe morning after finding the embezzlement (Chapter 3), Claire executed the next crucial move: a deep analysis of the prenup she and Daniel had signed five years ago.

Their agreement, drafted by Daniel's expensive lawyers, had been a humiliating joke to the Sterlings. It stated that in the event of divorce, Claire would leave with only the assets she brought in and a small, fixed lump sum. Vanessa, at the signing, had made a pointed comment: "Make sure you read the fine print, Claire. It protects legacy wealth, not just bank accounts."

Claire had smiled politely then. Now, her smile was predatory.

She pulled the prenup from her home safe and took it to a high-rise office downtown to meet her own new legal counsel, Sarah, a fearsome specialist in forensic divorces. Claire placed the audited financial file and a printed copy of the scandalous photo on Sarah's desk.

Sarah looked at the photo, then the audit. Her eyes narrowed. "This isn't just infidelity, Claire. This is asset conversion. The foundation funds Daniel embezzled are 'marital property' to the extent he used them for business. But since he gave them back to Vanessa in the form of gifts and real estate purchases, he has actively commingled funds, diluted their origin, and hidden them."

Claire pointed to Clause 14(b) of the prenup. This clause—Daniel’s ego-driven safeguard—stated that "any assets acquired during the marriage through illegal activity, fraud, or intentional dissipation of funds, even if commingled, are not protected by the agreement and shall be considered joint assets, with the innocent party retaining dynamic equity."

Vanessa thought the fine print protected their theft. Claire realized it was the exact legal weapon that would transfer their wealth to her. Because Daniel embezzled the ten million dollars from the family foundation to his 'shell company,' and then used that money to finance gifts and property for Vanessa, all of it was now "joint equity" she could claw back.

By Friday afternoon, Sarah had filed an emergency injunction, freezing Daniel’s business accounts and placing a temporary lean on the newly-purchased Miami condo (the one Vanessa had hidden). The legal framework was set. The Sterlings' "legacy wealth" was being held hostage by the forensic accountant they had dismissed.

The scene in Chapter 1 was now armed and locked.

The financial fraud (Chapter 3) and the specific clause in the prenup (Chapter 4) meant that Claire wasn't just a scorned wife; she was the majority stakeholder in Daniel's assets, including the stolen foundation funds and the properties they financed.
Chapter 8 - The Price of RedemptionThe settlement from Chapter 7 was finalized in record time, driven by Richard's desire to bury the scandal. She had traded the luxury cage for a position of control.
