The Last Dinner Party / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Alibi’s CollapseImmediately following the reveal in Chapter 5, the Sterling penthouse became a war room. Richard Sterling, a man who built an empire on quiet power, was now faced with two simultaneous collapses: his marriage and his family’s integrity.

He looked from the shocking image of his wife and son (image_92fc8d.jpg) to the calm woman in the blue dress. He didn't look at Daniel or Vanessa yet. He looked at the evidence binder Claire laid on the table.

"Ten million dollars," Richard whispered, his voice dangerously low.

Vanessa, attempting to regain control, grabbed a champagne flute. Her face was pale, but her voice was a viper's hiss. "Richard, this is preposterous. The photo... it's a deepfake! And this 'audit'? She's an accountant, Richard, she can manipulate numbers! This is the desperate act of a woman who knows her husband doesn't want her."

Daniel, in image_92fc8d.jpg, finally dropped his hand from his head. He tried to mimic Vanessa's defiance. "Yeah, Dad. She’s crazy. I never took foundation money. This whole thing is a setup! We were… we were celebrating my launch that night, we were drunk, it meant nothing!"

Claire walked over to the portrait. She referenced the background: the wedding portrait of Claire and Daniel that was slightly crooked because he had slammed the door (as mentioned in Chapter 2).

"You were celebrating your 'launch' by committing fraud," Claire said. "The startup funding you claimed came from an angel investor was actually routed through the Sterling Foundation. I followed the trail from your 'consulting fees' account, Daniel, to the account of 'Margo DeWitt'—Vanessa's ninety-year-old grandmother. The grandmother who mysteriously authorized the purchase of a Miami property, two weeks after your largest 'consulting fee' withdrawal."

Claire flipped open the binder. She didn't argue. She just presented facts. "Richard, here are the flight logs showing Vanessa traveling with Daniel to Miami on the exact days the cash transactions were made. Here are surveillance photos of Daniel and Vanessa leaving luxury boutiques with the jewelry she claimed you bought her."

The alibi of ignorance collapsed. The affair was the leverage for the money, and the money was the physical evidence of their treason.

Richard stood up. He walked to the canvas. He looked at Vanessa—the woman he loved, the woman who had systematic betrayed him with his own child. He grabbed the portrait and threw it against the marble floor. The glass shattered, echoing the collapse of the Sterling dynasty.

"Clear out," Richard said, his voice a growl. "Everyone, out. Except Claire."

Vanessa and Daniel were trapped. Their audience was gone, but the auditor remained.
