Chapter 8 - The Return to the Lake Placid EstateSpring in the Adirondacks arrived with a breathtaking, violent beauty.

As the deep winter snow melted away from the mountain slopes, exposing rich green valleys, budding wildflowers, and the sparkling blue expanse of Lake Placid, life at the historic estate transformed into a rhythm of absolute tranquility and healing.
The trauma of that freezing night behind the greenhouse slowly faded, replaced by the warmth of morning sunlight streaming through the study windows and the sound of birds singing in the ancient pines.
Claire had taken full executive control of the White Pine Winter Resort, applying her sharp intellect and natural leadership skills to modernize the facilities, increase employee wages, and turn the resort into a world-class luxury sanctuary. Under her direction, the business flourished beyond anything her late father had ever imagined.
One magnificent Saturday afternoon in May, Claire and I sat together on the wide cedar deck overlooking the lake, sipping iced lemonade as a gentle mountain breeze rustled through the trees.
Claire wore a vibrant yellow sundress, her skin glowing with health and vitality, the faint shadow of her facial bruise completely gone.
“You know, Daniel,” Claire said softly, turning her head to look at me with a warm, adoring smile. “For four years, I thought I was the lucky one in this marriage. I thought you were just a quiet, ordinary guy who somehow managed to love a complicated woman with a messy family.”
I smiled, reaching across the table to entwine my fingers with hers. “And what do you think now?”
“Now I know that I was rescued by a king,” she laughed gently, squeezing my hand. “Though I have to admit, it took a little getting used to the idea that my husband commands an international syndicate.”
“The syndicate answers to me, Claire,” I reminded her, my eyes locking onto hers with absolute devotion. “But I answer only to you.”
May you like
She leaned across the table, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to my lips. “Good. Because I have zero intention of ever letting you go.”
Down on the lawn below us, Marcus Hale—our loyal tactical commander—was supervising a new security detail, though out here in the peaceful mountains, their rifles were rarely needed for anything more than deterring curious wildlife. The estate was safe. Our lives were secure.
