Chapter 7 - Nina’s Panic and the Sister’s BetrayalWhile Claire and I settled into the quiet, protected peace of the Lake Placid estate, Nina Whitmore was experiencing the complete and utter collapse of her privileged suburban existence in Saratoga Springs.

It was 4:00 PM on a freezing Wednesday afternoon when Nina pulled her luxury SUV into the driveway of her sprawling colonial-style home, expecting a comfortable evening of wine and online shopping. Instead, she found two unfamiliar men in dark suits standing calmly on her front porch.

Nina slammed on her brakes, her heart hammering against her ribs. She rolled down her driver’s side window cautiously.

“Can I help you? If you’re solicitors, I’m not interested,” Nina snapped, trying to project an air of wealthy entitlement that she no longer possessed.

The taller of the two men—a senior enforcer named Alexei—stepped forward, holding a laminated document toward the window.

“Mrs. Nina Sterling,” Alexei stated in a flat, expressionless tone. “By order of the federal bankruptcy receiver acting on behalf of the Ghost King’s asset recovery division, this property has been seized due to fraudulent mortgage origination and unpaid corporate margin debt.”

Nina’s jaw dropped. She threw the car door open, stumbling out onto the driveway. “Seized?! Are you out of your mind?! My husband is a senior partner at a regional law firm! We bought this house legally! You can't just throw me out!”

“Your husband’s law firm terminated his partnership this morning after we provided their managing partners with evidence of your family’s embezzlement scheme,” Alexei replied coldly. “Your husband has already packed his bags and left for his mother’s house in Vermont. You have exactly thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing and vacate the premises.”

“No! This is a mistake! Let me speak to Daniel!” Nina screamed, bursting into hysterical tears. “Tell my sister Claire to call off her maniac husband! This is insane!”

“Mrs. Sterling,” Alexei leaned in close, his slate-grey eyes flashing with a terrifying, silent warning. “Your sister is currently sitting by a warm fireplace in Lake Placid while you are standing on frozen pavement. Be grateful you are being allowed to leave with your clothes. Another word, and we won’t be so polite.”

Realizing that resistance was completely futile, Nina slumped against the side of her car, defeated by the absolute ruthlessness of an empire she had spent her whole life mocking. She pulled out her phone with trembling fingers, dialing her mother’s number for the hundredth time that day.

It went straight to voicemail. Evelyn was gone, stripped of her wealth, her status, and her power, wandering the cold streets of Albany with a second-hand duffel bag and a one-way bus ticket to nowhere.

The Whitmore dynasty had not just fallen; it had been completely wiped off the map.
