Chapter 10 - Unearthing the PastAs summer reached its peak, painting the Adirondacks in vibrant shades of emerald and gold, the final loose ends of our old lives were quietly tied up.

A sealed legal packet arrived from the federal bankruptcy court in Albany. Inside was the final judicial decree dissolving Claire’s legal ties to her mother and brother, permanently severing their civil standing and denying any future claims to the estate or its corporate subsidiaries.
Evelyn and Marcus had long since vanished from the region, reportedly living in a rundown motel near the Canadian border, surviving on menial odd jobs—a microscopic fraction of the suffering they had inflicted on others throughout their lives.
One quiet Sunday morning, while reviewing architectural expansion blueprints for the resort’s new alpine spa wing in the study, Claire paused and looked up at me.
“Daniel,” she said thoughtfully. “Do you ever look back at the night in the snow and wonder what would have happened if I hadn't found that diary, or if you hadn't tracked my bracelet?”

“I don't wonder about 'what ifs,' Claire,” I answered softly, taking her hands in mine. “Because the universe was never going to let them win. Whether I was wearing a tailored suit as a logistics consultant or the crowned wraith of the Ghost King, I would have torn down every wall in this country to pull you out of that snow.”
She smiled, her eyes glistening with unshed tears of profound gratitude and love. She reached out, cupping my cheek with her palm.

“You really are my hero, Daniel,” she whispered.
“And you are my absolute anchor,” I replied, leaning in to kiss her gently.
