Chapter 6 - The Ghost King’s LedgerBy the following Tuesday, Claire had recovered enough strength to be discharged from Adirondack Medical Center.

With Marcus Hale and an elite tactical detail escorting us, we bypassed the media circus gathered outside the hospital gates and boarded a private, secure helicopter that lifted us straight from the hospital’s rooftop helipad directly to the private landing pad of the Lake Placid estate.

As the helicopter settled onto the snowy lawn, I stepped out first, extending my hand to help Claire down. She looked around at the towering pines, the crisp mountain air filling her lungs, and the magnificent historic stone-and-timber mansion rising majestically against the backdrop of the Adirondack peaks.

It was her home now. Entirely, legally, and permanently hers.

“Are you alright, sweetheart?” I asked softly, pulling her close against my side to shield her from the rotor wash.

“I’ve never felt more free, Daniel,” Claire smiled, her eyes shining with a bright, unclouded light. She looked up at me, a mixture of awe and lingering disbelief in her expression. “When Marcus at the hospital shouted out that name... the Ghost King... I couldn't believe it. My quiet, gentle husband is an international syndicate legend?”

I chuckled softly, wrapping my arm around her waist as we began walking toward the grand front doors, which were held wide open by two of my senior security capos.

“I never lied to you about who I am at my core, Claire,” I reminded her gently. “I am a logistics consultant. I manage global supply chains, secure shipping routes, and ensure that hostile elements don't interfere with our operations. It just so happens that my supply chains involve a slightly different class of merchandise.”

She laughed—a warm, musical sound that chased away the final lingering shadows of the blizzard. “A slightly different class, he says.”

Inside, the mansion had undergone a complete security overhaul. The staff had been vetted and replaced with loyal operatives from my organization, and every single entry point was secured with advanced biometric surveillance.

We walked into her late father’s private study—a magnificent room lined with leather-bound books, a massive stone fireplace, and a mahogany desk overlooking the frozen lake.

Resting in the center of the desk was a thick, leather-bound ledger labeled simply: The Whitmore Family Trust - Confidential.

Claire walked over, running her fingers gently over the aged leather binding. “Dad kept this in his wall safe. He told me once that if anything ever happened to him, this book would explain everything about why Evelyn was always so desperate to control the family business.”

She opened the cover. Inside, neatly penned in her father’s meticulous cursive, was a detailed financial history of the Whitmore household—documenting how Evelyn had systematically embezzled funds from family accounts, forged signatures on property deeds, and even attempted to siphon money from Claire’s personal trust fund since she was a teenager.

And right there on the final page was a signed, notarized addendum drafted just days before her father’s death, formally disinheriting Evelyn and Marcus entirely, leaving every single corporate share, land title, and liquid asset exclusively to Claire.

“He knew,” Claire whispered, a fresh tear escaping her eye as she traced the signature. “He knew what they were capable of, and he protected me even after he was gone.”

“And now,” I said, stepping up behind her and wrapping my arms securely around her shoulders, resting my chin against her hair, “the protection is permanent.”
