Chapter 9 - Grace Leaves the Estate

After cases stabilized, Grace resigned.
Evan stared at letter.
“Why?”
“Because job is finished.”
“No.”
She raised eyebrow.
“No?”
“Children need you.”
“That’s not employment contract.”
“They love you.”
“So do I.”
The words landed.
She meant children.
Maybe more.
“I need life not built around crisis.”
He understood.
Hated.
“You want leave.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Boston. Nursing program.”
She had wanted become pediatric nurse before Julian’s death derailed finances.
Evan immediately said, “I’ll pay.”
She glared.
“Of course.”
He realized.
“Sorry.”
“I can pay now. Julian’s estate settlement and whistleblower reward.”
“Good.”
He meant it.
She packed.
Sophie cried.
Caleb refused speak for two days.
Grace promised visit.
Evan drove her station personally.
No security in car except distant follow.
At platform he said, “Thank you.”
“For?”
“Sleeping outside door.”
She smiled sadly.
“Take my place.”
“What?”
“Not literally floor.”
“I know.”
“Be there.”
“I will.”
Train arrived.
Grace hugged him.
Longer than expected.
Then left.
Evan did not ask her stay.
May you like
That was growth.
