Chapter 8 - The Brake Line

Forensic reconstruction of Amelia’s vehicle had been incomplete because evidence destroyed years earlier. Julian’s files contained repair-shop photographs taken secretly after crash.
Brake line had two modifications.
One intended gradual pressure loss.
Another designed complete failure.
Dominic admitted only first in audio.
Who added second?
Martin?
Malcolm?
Vanessa?
A receipt answered.
Replacement part purchased using Cross Security procurement account.
Authorized by Evan’s father’s former lieutenant, Thomas Whitaker.
Evan’s uncle.
Thomas supposedly died before Amelia.
But bank records showed identity used afterward.
Someone forged.
Martin had access.
Then Detective Bennett uncovered text between Martin and Malcolm:
D WILL FRIGHTEN HER.
I WILL MAKE SURE SHE NEVER TALKS.
Martin had sabotaged car beyond Dominic’s plan.
He murdered Amelia.
Dominic believed accident.
Vanessa believed accidental consequence.
Malcolm covered.
Martin killed intentionally to protect broader operation.
Truth finally complete.
Evan attended hearing when Martin charged murder.
He did not speak to him.
Grace sat beside.
Sophie asked later, “Bad man goes jail?”
“Yes.”
“Forever?”
“Probably.”
“Then Mommy can rest?”
Evan couldn’t answer.
Grace did.
“Your mommy was resting already. Truth is for living people.”
Sophie nodded.
Evan looked at Grace.
Another piece shifted.
He loved her.
Not because she saved children.
Not because she uncovered truth.
Because she refused let grief become identity.

He did nothing.
