Chapter 6 - Sophie Vanishes

Caleb was found crying beside west garden gate.

Sophie gone.

No alarms triggered because Martin had administrative security credentials.

Evan became something Grace had never seen.

Not violent.

Worse.

Silent.

He stared at Caleb.

“Who took her?”

“Mr. Martin said Daddy needed her.”

Caleb sobbed.

“I said no. Sophie went because he said you were hurt.”

Evan crouched.

“You did nothing wrong.”

His voice almost steady.

Grace arrived twenty minutes later with police.

He looked at her once.

“I failed her.”

“No.”

“I brought Martin inside.”

“You trusted wrong man.”

“I fail by trusting. I fail by not trusting.”

Grace stepped closer.

“Then stop making this about your guilt and find Sophie.”

Sharp.

Necessary.

He nodded.

Martin called thirty minutes later.

Video.

Sophie sat tied to chair inside unknown house but unhurt.

“Daddy!”

Evan leaned toward screen.

“I’m here.”

Martin appeared.

Calm.

“Hello, Evan.”

“Let her go.”

“I will.”

“What do you want?”

“Julian’s ledger.”

Grace stepped into frame.

“I have it.”

Martin smiled.

“Grace Miller.”

“Why?”

“Because your brother should have stopped.”

“You killed him?”

“I arranged pills.”

Her knees almost weakened.

Evan’s hand steadied elbow.

Martin continued.

“Dominic killed Amelia accidentally. Malcolm covered it. Vanessa panicked. I spent years keeping pieces apart.”

“Why?” Evan asked.

“Because your father built alliance worth hundreds millions.”

“My father is dead.”

“Legacy isn’t.”

“Mine is.”

Martin laughed.

“No. You just convinced yourself you’re clean because warehouses pay taxes now.”

That hit.

Evan did not deny.

“What do you want?”

“Ledger and bank drive.”

“In exchange?”

“Sophie.”

“Where?”

Martin sent location.

Abandoned Vale equestrian property near state line.

Police prepared tactical plan.

Evan refused entering alone despite Martin demand.

Grace also refused staying behind.

Detective Bennett finally snapped, “Nobody here gets to be action hero. We do this correctly.”

Remarkably both obeyed.

At property, Grace carried decoy ledger.

Hidden teams surrounded barn.

Evan approached visible entrance.

Martin stood holding Sophie by shoulder, gun in other hand.

“Sophie.”

She cried.

“Daddy.”

“Look at me.”

She did.

“Remember two sets of rules?”

Her face crumpled.

“No more.”

He smiled gently.

“Exactly.”

Martin demanded drive.

Grace stepped forward.

“You killed Julian.”

“Yes.”

“Why not me?”

“You knew nothing.”

“I know now.”

“Bad luck.”

She threw decoy envelope toward ground.

Martin glanced.

Sophie bit his hand.

Exactly as Evan once taught her during stranger-danger training.

Martin cursed.

Evan moved.

Shot fired.

Police surged.

Evan tackled Sophie behind trough.

Martin was shot in shoulder by officer.

Alive.

Captured.

Grace ran to Sophie.

Child clung to both adults.

“You came.”

Grace whispered, “Always.”

Evan looked at her.

Something passed.

Family beginning in worst place.

But Dominic remained missing.

And Vanessa’s father Malcolm was suddenly gone from his home.

The final enemies were moving.
