Sophie once asked, “If Grace marries Dad, does Mommy stop being Mommy?”

Grace answered before Evan.

“No.”

“Can I have two?”

“You can have one mom who died and one person who loves you differently.”

“What do I call you?”

“Grace.”

Sophie thought.

“Maybe someday bonus mom.”

Grace cried in bathroom later.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Bad?”

“No.”

He held her.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if we build family, he belongs in it too.”

She cried.

Then he offered ring.

“Grace Miller, I can’t promise easy.”

“Terrible opening.”

He smiled.

“I can promise no secrets about danger, no decisions for you, and no pretending past didn’t happen.”

“Better.”

“Will you marry me?”

“Yes.”
