Chapter 9 - The Rebuilt Family

Over the next year, the Vance Foundation blossomed into one of the most respected charitable institutions in the state. Thomas and I worked side by side every day, expanding our outreach programs and helping dozens of local families establish stable livelihoods.

Unlike Julian, Thomas never cared about high-society galas or designer labels. When he looked at my father, he saw a legendary leader whose wisdom he treasured; when he looked at me, he saw a partner he respected with all his heart.

On a warm Saturday in June, our community gathered once again at the Oakridge center.

This time, there was no shame, no haughty demands, and no cold arrogance. The hall was filled with hand-picked wildflowers from our own greenhouse, the neighborhood aunties brought trays of homemade dishes, and children played tag across the manicured lawns.

Thomas stood beneath the floral arch in his Army dress uniform, looking at me with undisguised adoration as the acoustic guitar began to play.

My father walked me down the aisle. His head was held high, his back straight, his eyes shining with pure joy. He wore a crisp suit adorned with his full military honors, walking proudly beside his daughter.

When we reached the altar, Dad placed my hand into Thomas’s.

"Take care of her, son," Dad whispered.

"With my life, Sergeant Major," Thomas replied sincerely.

When we exchanged our vows, surrounded by the true, honest people who loved us, there was not a single doubt left in my heart. Real love didn't demand status or wealth; it was built on honor, loyalty, and mutual respect.
